The Australian Shearers Hall of Fame at Shear Outback is interactive, educational, entertaining and fun

The Australian Shearers Hall of Fame at The Shear Outback Facility is a 16 hectare site that is a multi-faceted tourist and educational attraction.

Shearers enjoy legendary status in Australia, and their yarns, stories and colourful characters form an important part of Australian heritage and culture.

The facility comprises several experiences including -

  • The Australian Shearers Hall of Fame;
  • The Shear Outback Exhibition;
  • The 80 year old historic Murray Downs Woolshed that was relocated from its former home outside Swan Hill Victoria.

It also contains a Special Exhibition Gallery and an ever-evolving year-round calendar of events and programs.

The site holds a rebuilt Southern Cross windmill, with a 7.7 metre wheel on a 13.9m tower, restored by local windmill engineer Tim Matt, who's cv of restoration works includes the Homebush Bay Olympic site windmill.

The experience is interactive, educational, entertaining and fun as visitors meet the shearers, shedhands, sheep and dogs that work in the shearing and wool industry.

Visitors can experience first-hand the stamina and training needed to shear a sheep and also take on Jackie Howe's legendary blade-shears record, hang out in a shearers sling, get the feel of a hand piece and take part in live shearing demonstrations several times daily. View the magnificent Grahame Daniels collection of machine shears, the Koerstz Wool Press, the Robotic Shearer and the Biotec Syringe.

You will also experience the smells, sights and sounds of the sheds. You can also even try “throwing a fleece” – crikey, it is not as easy as it looks!

Listen to stories from the cooks, shearers and shed hands, and “snuggle up” in the shearer's accommodation. For a real piece of history, you can search for relatives and friends on the extensive 'Who Shore Where' database. Maybe you have some stories of your own you'd like to share! The 'Who Shore Where' listing is an ever-expanding collection of information and historic data designed to enable easy cross-referencing and retrieval of information pertaining to all aspects of the shearing industry and personnel from across the nation.

The Australian Shearer's Hall of Fame is a testament to the great guns of today and yesteryear. Shearers enjoy legendary status in Australia and links to Australia's vibrant and colourful shearing culture are prevalent in Australian contemporary life and language. The centre aims to show visitors the "colour, history and character" of the shearing industry.
