Honeymoon Pool is where the Kids Learn Camping Skills.
My kids and I have been going to Honeymoon Pool for many years on a camping holiday. I have always taken the kids camping and they have all been able to learn camping skills that they now put into practice themselves. The first thing to do on camping holidays is to set up camp. This is where the kids learn camping skills. We will teach them how to erect their tent for the night, inflate the mattresses and get the sleeping bags and pillows out. Once the tent is up, we will teach them how to light a fire safely and to cook a barbeque. In the morning after the kids camping night they will learn camping skills like taking the tent down and folding it up ready for the next night or next time it is being used.
Honeymoon Pool is set on the banks of the Collie River and the overflow from Wellington Dam makes it a picturesque camping and picnic spot. It is set amongst the Jarrah, Blackbutt and Peppermint trees. When we go for a walk, there are also always lots of delicate maiden-hair ferns as well. As the name implies, it is a romantic place to visit, but it is also a great place to camp for a few nights with plenty of things to do. It is ideal for people to take a bushwalk (in fact the Bibbulmum Track makes its way through here); Wellington Dam is only a short drive or pleasant walk or even bike ride away. There is a lovely pool to take a dip in; you can canoe on the river and a number of different pools to visit including the Rapids, Big Rock, Little Rock and Long Pool. During the season, marron can also be caught here. Fishing is also allowed with the appropriate fishing licence.
There are no showers here, but plenty of places to go for a swim. Honeymoon Pool has recently been redeveloped with flushing toilets; wood barbeques and central rubbish pick up area and also has picnic tables and even a camp kitchen now. It has untreated tap water that needs to be boiled before drinking, but we bring our own water anyway on our camping holidays. The camping area is broken up in three different areas, Honeymoon Pool, Stones Brook and Gelcoat – they are all in the same area and fairly close, but enough room between each site to have your own privacy. Stones Brook (14 campsites) does not have its own fire rings though and you will need to use the camp kitchen that has a free gas BBQ and gas pot boiler or supply your own portable cooking equipment. Gelcoat has 11 sites and a communal fire ring. This area will be upgraded when more funds become available.
If the fire danger is very high or extreme, all fires are banned so if you are staying here during this likely high fire danger period, it is advisable to bring your own gas BBQ or camping stove.
