Grindelwald Village, north of Launceston in Tasmania, was established in 1980 by Roelf Voss. He was inspired to create his village after he and his wife, Miep, visited Switzerland, where Roelf fell in love with the Alpine style of architecture. The first stage involved the creation of a seven-hectare lake. Next, Roelf constructed authentic Swiss-style chalets with high-pitched roofs, wide eaves, exposed beams, white-painted exteriors and balconies.
Grindelwald now covers almost 405 hectares and has hundreds of homes as well as a restaurant and bar, golf course, tennis courts, hotel accommodation and self-contained chalets. The village also has an over-50s estate with strata-title chalets.
Rita and Christian Ramseyer, originally from Switzerland, live in one of the most authentic chalets on the estate. The interior of their home is filled with Swiss bric-a-brac and furniture. The Ramseyers say it is just like being back home, thanks to the beautiful views and friendly atmosphere of the village.
Adjacent to a Swiss Residential Village, surrounding an 18 acre man-made lake, the atmosphere is truly Swiss, with Swiss inspired architecture, featuring steeply pitched rooves, extensive use of western red cedar, window shutters and flower boxes.
Grindelwald Swiss Village features a quaint shopping arcade with a number of specialty outlets including crafts, a chocolate shop and a village bakery.
The golf pro shop provides access for the newly completed Putt It, an 18 hole par 54 world class mini golf course. Situated on the grounds of the resort Putt It provides a family activity that can be enjoyed by players of all ages.
