Deep Sea Fishing Charter - Day 5 of our 11 day tour

Friday

Up early to prepare breakfast and make some sandwiches to take on the deep sea fishing charter boat with us. We meet the bus at 7.30 and go for a short bus ride through the sand dunes to the point where the boat is moored. Saying hello to Bernie (the boat captain) we are soon all on board the boat and heading out through the gap in the reef.

On the way out we trawl for fish and catch this wonderful dolphin fish. (No marlin today, but we have several times before). We also see off in the distance a few hump back whales in their annual migration.

Bernie drops anchor at our first stop and before you can say “Captain Blackbeard” the first fish is already winched on board by Anne. (One for the ladies). We stay here for about an hour and catch several very good fish. We go to another spot and drop anchor again and once again very quickly catch fish. I love catching these fish, but I think I get even more excitement about watching other people who have never done this before pulling in their first fish and the obvious pleasure they receive.

Anne again winds in her winch and she catches two fish on the one line. Margaret winds hers in and all she catches is the head of a fish, obviously a shark has taken the rest. So we move on again to get away from the shark.

Not too much of our lunch gets eaten today, because when the fish are biting that is what you do – fish. I make sure every one has plenty to drink though, and they have sunscreen on because the glare from the water can dry you out very quickly. Before we left, a couple of people were a bit unsure about venturing out on a deep sea fishing charter because they had not been before and they were a bit worried about being sea sick. They had a “kwell” (sea sick tablet) before we left and today nobody has been sick. Some times people do get a bit sea sick, but mostly even these people still have a good time.

The sea is relatively calm today and you can see for ever.

All too soon it is time to head back to shore and once again we trawl while we return home.

We get back to Coral Bay from our deep sea fishing and Bernie and his crew fillet all our fish for us and we know what is for dinner tonight. Beautiful freshly caught, freshly barbecued fish. We catch a variety of fish including; Red Emperor, Spangled Emperor, Groper, Coral Trout and Snapper to mention a few.

I made some pumpkin soup, so I heat that up, while I get some salads ready and cook some chips to go with our fish. You should see the fillets of these fish, they are huge. Talk about living well!

Oh well another early start tomorrow after having spent two glorious days at Coral Bay.
