Visit Alice Springs as part of our Outback Australia 21 day camping tour.
Alice Springs is the heart of Australia. It is also known as Australia’s Oasis, or The Capital of the Outback, the most romantic country town in the world or to the locals quite simply “The Alice”.
The Arrente Aboriginal tribe have lived here for 20,000 years and if you ask the locals here now why The Alice is so great they will tell you the 5 C’s: the Climate, the Colours, the Culture, the Characters and the Closest town to every beach in Australia.
The Alice was not always the unofficial capital of Central Australia. Alluvial gold was discovered in 1887 at Arltunga and with the influx of prospectors and the associated merchants etc this was the growing area. Arltunga thrived for 30 years until the gold petered out. However, its buildings, mines, camps and machinery have been preserved and are about 110km from Alice.
Alice is known for its “fun and unusual” activities. It is where they hold Camel Races and regattas in dry river beds. There was even a film called “A Town Like Alice” made in 1956.
Alice Springs and its surrounding countryside (The Red Centre) offers us a unique experience you will never find in the cities. Instead of the skyscrapers there are the natural formations (like Uluru, MacDonnell Ranges, Kings Canyon etc). Instead of the confined spaces and noise associated with suburban living there is the remoteness and peace and quiet or actually the country noises. Instead of the dangerous human element, there are the dangerous natural elements like the remoteness, heat and people travelling unprepared.
We have a free day in Alice Springs as part of our 21 day tour. Some of the things you may want to consider doing (besides catching up on your washing) may be a visit to the School of the Air; the Royal Flying Doctor Service; (both excellent examples of how remote this beautiful country of ours is and the requirements for living in this isolated country. Other places include the Olive Pink Botanic Gardens, Alice Springs Desert Park, Frontier Camel Farm and perhaps even a Winery.
Summing up, year round blue skies, stunning landscapes and a vibrant, diverse community makes up The Alice.
